We attended the pottery class on October 5, and today, on December 15, we received a message about picking up our order. However, the bowl we received was broken. I paid $200 for this, and frankly, I’m appalled. As the provider of the service, it is your responsibility to ensure the product is properly completed and usable. When you are present during the process and see that something has gone wrong, it should only take a minute to correct, especially before finalizing the piece.
Instead, I was given a cracked bowl after two and a half months of waiting. This is completely unacceptable, and I’m left with a defective item that is unusable. This would make for a terrible gift—perhaps for someone who eats cereal without milk, but that’s not the point.
I expect this issue to be addressed immediately. If it is not, I will be sharing my negative experience with my audience on social media, as this level of service is completely unprofessional.

The two hour class was perfect amount of time for a beginner to get acquainted with the basics of pottery. The instructor was exceptional, providing clear and detailed instructions throughout the session. Even though many of us had never touched clay before, the instructor’s guidance made it easy to follow along and create something with our own hands. The rooftop setting added a unique and calming ambiance to the class.

This was a new experience for me and I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were friendly and educational throughout the pottery making process. The aesthetic and views here are beautiful. I took this as a solo class and made friends along the way. It’s definitely worth a visit if you are in town. Bonus points for the street name being that of my late Grandmother

Wonderful experience with Bitter Root Pottery. My best friend and I did a last minute beginner adult class with Haley and we had a blast! Great price, easy to follow, and a lot of fun! Highly recommend for a new activity, beginner friendly! You get a little messy but thats the best part, brings out the kid in all of us!

This place was so much fun! I took my partner to the beginner’s class as a date night and we had so much fun! The staff were really friendly and helpful. The instructor was good at teaching and often helped when one of us had trouble. Highly recommend for a group event or a date niggt

Had an amazing experience at the pottery studio. Came as a beginner and received a perfect explanation and help as I was creating my pieces. Very caring and knowledgeable teachers! Can’t wait to pick up my bowls and use them at home! Will bring my kids to try it as well. Highly recommend!

I had Jesse as my instructor and he was the best EVER. He was not only such a fabulous teacher, but also a fabulous person. 10/10 class I will definitely be back.
Lexi Fleck

I love supporting smaller business but this one in my experience isn’t it. As a returning ceramist, I took a class here 2021. They are not very flexible if you miss a class and some of the instructors are questionable. What I mean is they are knowledgeable but I had an experience with one here that was rude. Her name was Melody and long story short, she became very upset with me for being 10 min late. It was very clear it made the whole class uncomfortable and I should have just walked out immediately. I understand it’s a class and coming in late is a disruption but her disciplinary attitude towards me was uncalled for. Very Teach vs Student vibe. We are all adults and no one should be treated less.
If you are a beginner or returning ceramist, I’d highly consider trying out POT LA or better yet Still life in Santa Monica. Better prices and better quality all around.
Lorena M. Curiel

This was such an amazing time and a great introduction into pottery. Our teacher Sara was phenomenal at showing us how to start from ground zero.
The smaller class size was definitely a plus, it felt very intimate. 10/10 highly recommend to everyone!

WOW, I enjoyed myself so much! I took the 6-week course at Good Dirt LA and I had a wonderful experience. Not only did I meet other creative people, but also I learned new skills. Every session was interesting, whether it was while working on the wheel or with my hands when creating pinching pieces or playing with glaze colors and how they blend with different clays. It was also quite relaxing, mentally. I LOVED it all!!! 🙂 I’ll sign up for another 6-week round! Thanks GDLA!!

I bought back a mug I had bought on Saturday as the handle snapped off, and it was clearly a processing fault.
The shop assistant tried to make out I had accidentally ‘banged it’ which I hadn’t and then tried to say I wasn’t washing it correctly? It’s a mug – you need to wash it!
There was no sign I had chipped or smashed the mug and I’m not so cheap I feel the need to break an item and then drive across town to swap it out. I returned it because the item was faulty.
She wouldn’t swap it out until I put my foot down and said I felt a $46 mug should last longer than 3 months. She begrudgingly went to her manager who agreed to swap it out but she was clearly ‘put out’. She passive aggressively wrapped the mug in paper and thrust it at me without a word?
Sorry, is it your company profit being affected? No. How about this ‘ I’m sorry you had to experience and bring the item back. Please accept this replacement and Happy Holidays’.
I get this is a high end ceramics shop but please, reign in the attitude and become a customer service focused business and treat your customers with more respect and courtesy.
I’ve had more polite and respectful service at TJ Max….

Who doesn’t like high-end ceramics and home items? Even if you aren’t looking for anything it’s great to browse and look at all the amazing items. They have a design center area where you can try table settings ideas out. Lots of unique items, staff very friendly. For Covid, everyone must use the hand sanitizer on entry. Street parking, no lot.

I love Heath Ceramics. They create beautiful and durable plates and bowls that I use every day. I’ve been slowly adding to my collection as the pieces are a bit pricey (but worth it). The shop in LA is night and airy, and allows you to pick out the style that best fits your design aesthetic. If you order online for shipping, they pack everything exceptionally well. Definitely recommend!

An absolutely amazing time!! It was so much fun. Our teacher, Princess, was fantastic – she took her time and was very calm and reassuring even though I was worried about messing up the clay. I am definitely coming back and loved every moment here. Leander was in the back working on some cool art too – everyone was kind and a total blast to be around.

So much fun! We made a mug and ashtray with Adam who was the best instructor. He was so patient and kind. I will DEFINITELY BE BACK.
The Moreno House

Came in with no experience in pottery or any art medium and Emi was SO lovely and helpful! I wanted to make a silly little swimming pool jewelry dish and Emi guided me through every step and provided lots of different ideas and options along the way. The class was 100% personalized and very flexible. I would recommend this studio and especially the instructor to anyone! Amazing experience and I love my lumpy little pool!!!

Emi!! Absolutely phenomenal. Her supportive and encouragement during instruction was so appreciated. She saved my piece several times and was able to help me achieve exactly what I wanted to make! I feel much more confident after this class today!! ❤️

It’s really really, really, really really good. The vibe is nice. The facility is nice. Everyone is nice. And I need a recommended the teacher Amber who teach me how to do on the wheel. And she is so friendly and understanding and help me finish my final project. I am so appreciated her. It’s soooo good there. I will go back a lot of times
Xinrou Liang

Brought my boyfriend here for his birthday. We took the one-time wheel throwing class to try it out, and it was an exquisite experience! I had called earlier in the week to confirm that they would still be open in the midst of the Covid madness. John, our teacher, assured me that refunds would be honored up until the day of the class, even though policy asks for a 5 day notice, in the case of closure. He was very accommodating and I felt at ease about that (since it was a birthday gift, after all!).
Once we got to the studio, we saw that there was open air flow (garage-like windows/wall), and everyone was wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing. No concerns there. The space itself is gorgeous and clean, too.
John was a really good teacher. I would know because I’m a special education teacher myself! He took his time to be very deliberate and detailed in his demonstrations. He spent time with each student individually, offering critique and support mindfully and with positivity. His verbal explanations were so on-point, and it was very easy for me to make minor adjustments in my movements to be successful at the wheel. I ended up with 2 lovely pieces, and so did my boyfriend. The studio fires them up for a later pick up. We had an incredible time! Absolutely worth the visit and trip to LA.
Highly recommend in this time of uncertainty and maybe boredom!

There are not enough stars for this magical place!!! This is far and away the best pottery studio in all of Los Angeles, probably anywhere. Prior to taking classes at Hands in Clay I tried countless studios in the LA area and was always left feeling deflated, frustrated and like I wasted hundreds of dollars. In contrast, every class I pay for at Hands in Clay feels like I’m getting SO MUCH MORE THAN I PAY FOR. The level of individual attention and instruction is incredible. It’s like having personal pottery coaches/trainers that are in my corner and very invested in my success. I have truly never had better teachers for anything in my life. I think the difference is that Richard and Donna 1) actually CARE greatly about their student’s success and 2) have great awareness so they know when to help you step-by-step and when to give you space to experiment and practice on your own.
Aside from the stellar teaching here, this is the CLEANEST pottery studio in existence. It helps your workflow, makes for a very comfortable experience, and sets a tone for everyone to be considerate of one another. This is definitely not the closest pottery studio to me, as I live in the West Adams area, but I will continue to come here forever more!!!! You’re stuck with me, guys 🙂
Andria Eden

I recommend this studio to everyone I know who wants to try pottery and I can’t recommend them enough. Donna and Richard are so knowledgable and their tips and teaching are always so spot on. They love teaching and they approach teaching by getting to know you and finding out how you learn. It’s so special in that way and you can’t find their attention and care anywhere else and I’ve been to so many studios in the past few years. West LA Art world is so lucky to have them now in the community. If you are trying to figure out if pottery is your thing or not the best place to find out is Hands in Clay LA.
Banafsheh Salimi

We visited Hands in Clay with some video crew and two other people included myself were given a private course at Hands in Clay LA. Donna was so amazing and so accommodating, especially with our video crew. The class itself was so fun and an amazing bonding experience for my friends and I. Highly recommend!
Layma Khoram

I had never made something with my own hands that was artistic and practical, until I went to Hands in Clay. For those that are not confident in making something like this, this is the place to start. Richard and Donna live the lives of artists, dedicating themselves to their passions, and now they have a space to share them.
Pictured is a bowl that was half finished, as I had to leave class due to an emergency. Decided to keep it that way. The picture is a serving of my favorite dish my mom makes, picadillo. I wanted the first thing I ate from it to be special.
The process is meditative and Richard and Donna are pros and work with all experience levels. A single class can be transformative. This would be a great activity for a group to bond over as well.
Allan Santiago

I went for my 1st pottery lesson under Richard a few months back and came back for a second one yesterday under Donna. Both of them are excellent instructors with a passion for their craft, always patient and encouraging. They gave us lots of room too to explore our ideas and creativity.
I love the wide range of tools and equipments which help us alot as we work on our designs. The studio is very clean and neat too and ….comes with a friendly doggie
My family and I truly enjoy our time at the studio!
Will be back there again in my next visit to LA.

If you have never done pottery before you need to take one of their classes, i did and I’m hooked. I became a member in December. Their place is very clean, they have lovely staff, the owner and manager Kelley are always so friendly. Skyler, one of the teachers, is my favorite. Even when he isn’t teaching ill ask him for help with a question and he goes above and beyond to help me. I see him do this all the time with others. He is a gem. I truly love this place and hope it never goes anywhere. They are very affordable too! If you go to their website u can sign up for classes. Hope to see u there. 🙂
Here are some mugs i made!

I’ve taken two classes here so far. I think it’s a great value, some great instructors. The community studio model may not be for everyone but I think it works great. Taking classes works best if you can dedicate one or two additional sessions per week, which gets you more throwing time and product for your money. They are open very late. Parking on the street has never been a problem.
Casey Curtiss

I signed up for a month of classes on the website, and chose The Pottery Studio as they seemed to have beautiful facilities. I normally don’t like leaving reviews on things that are customer service based as I think it can detract from the qualities of an otherwise great establishment, however this studio’s customer service is particularly awful and should be considered when making an assessment on classes.
I attended the first class. The teacher was rushed and it was harder to follow initially. The location was nice and the facility itself is big and beautiful.
I was unable to attend some other classes due to an unexpected work trip, and then my car being the victim of a smash and grab in LA, leaving me carless for a bit while it gets repaired. I offered to provide insurance proof of this issue. I reached out to handle the missing classes and find a solution, they are completely unwilling to offer solutions for this.
It appears that if you purchase and if something unexpected arises, you must repay for the entire course with a discount (50% off is what they offered me – so nearly $365 for a month of classes.)
My suggestion is either purchase the additional flexibility plan at $25 (which brings this one month of classes to $250) or go with a different studio, as the customer service leaves much to be desired as other yelpers have expressed.
This isn’t a massive company, having great customer service for a Los Angeles based art studio does not feel like a big ask. Unfortunately in this case it is.
As of now my $ for my classes is being held hostage, and their extremely vague class policies section on their website leaves a lot of wiggle room in terms of accommodations for life events, even with proper documentation.
Looking back I would have gone for POT or a different studio in LA. It’s not just about the class or space, it’s also about the environment, the people that work here, and providing a safe space to escape daily life.
Update to add: I requested to retake the classes a different month, even year, as long as I could retake what I paid for. I reached out having only missed two classes, and do not want to take the final class with no knowledge of the previous two. They seem to be very fast at replying to provide an answer on google, but still have no responded to my email from this morning, asking if I could pay to implement the $25 flexibility to my order. It’s really sad when small businesses handle customer service like this. Another hidden google review, and some other lower reviews have all reflected issues around customer service itself. That should say enough.
Isabelle

The worst experience I’ve ever dealt with. Long story short. Do not waste your time and money. The owner, Marshall Blairass, is completely inconsiderate and unprofessional who thinks refund will solve all the problems. This studio runs with poor organization, cheap management, and very bad customer service. I really cannot support a studio owned by someone who thinks it’s okay to talk to another adult with total disrespect because he is the boss LOL please. Please don’t talk to your customers like that. You sound like an uneducated person.
Jenny Pak

Really chill 24/7 studio. People are there working all the time and the membership rates are reasonable. What a gem ✨

Such a fun, chill vibe! A group of eight of us from the office went to Maital’s for a holiday celebration. We sat in a circle, each of us at our own pottery wheel with a lump of clay. Maital demonstrated, and then came around to each of us to provide hands-on instruction on how to use the wheel and she made sure that we were all successful in making a bowl that had our own unique style to it. After finishing, we chose from a large selection of colors and then we returned to pick up the bowls after they were fired and glazed. I was honestly surprised at how vibrant and beautiful all of our bowls were! The colors did not disappoint, and the variety of shapes to our bowls made it looked like we really knew what we were doing, even though my last time making something out of clay was in preschool! It was a team-building and educational experience, while having a laugh and making something that I genuinely like and use. I definitely recommend going to Maital’s as a group activity or to take ceramics classes.

Extremely cozy environment. My son took some ceramics classes in junior college and wanted to introduce me to the craft. So he took me to this fabulous studio with a wonderful woman who is running it. The classes are extremely fun working with the clay is cathartic. I could not say enough nice things about the studio the owner and the amount of joy I have. I can’t say that I’ve created a masterpiece yet but just the process of creating has done a lot for my mental health.

This is a great place to get your hands wet. I’ve taken a class with my 7 year old niece and her friend and we had a blast. Learning how to use the clay wheel was great fun.

Super fun studio space, I’m not a master with clay by any means but Maital really helped show me the ropes haha. Her classes/sessions are as structured or unstructured as you’d like them to be!

I took a class and it was great but the turn around on the kiln is horrible. Like, glacial. I ran out of time to get a couple of pieces glazed because they took so long to get bisque fired. I thought they would’ve been out and ready after 4 days but no; it takes a full week to see your pieces again. I wouldn’t recommend taking a class here unless you have ample time to stop in and work on your ceramics. If you work full time, maybe reconsider. Oh, and don’t bother trying to call, because no one will pick up the phone, no matter what time of day it is. I was going to try to become a member, but I’d rather go literally anywhere else.

I’m not a member as I’m just passing thru LA, but I got a tour from Taylor and wow is this place awesome. Beautiful space, looks exceptionally well organized, and if Taylor is an indication, they probably have a great community. They’ve also taken smart precautions for keeping their members healthy and safe. Definitely a place I’d join if I was staying longer

Horrible studio. ZERO management. You can call and email your heart out and get zero response. I took my pots here to get bisqued and it took a week. In what universe does it take a week to bisque? They don’t post when the kiln is emptied on the website (nor when its fired) and because no one EVER answers the phone or calls you back (I am not exaggerating. They NEVER EVER answer the phone or call you back or email you back), you have to drive there only to be disappointed by an empty bisque shelf. We drove from Monrovia SIX TIMES and the kiln was not unloaded. It was a joke when they feebly posted after our fifth visit that the kiln would be emptied, and get this: ‘kiln will be emptied Friday OR Monday’. This place is a joke. If you want your pots fired, if you are serious about keeping a schedule with your work, do not go here. Plus glazing is ridiculously expensive. It’s just another LA scam run by people who do not care a whit about their business or the people they serve. Too many other studios to go to these days. Don’t waste your time, and avoid being frustrated, and choose another studio!
Here We Are

I’ve been part of the Claytivity family for over a year now and it truly saved me during the pandemic! I felt super comfortable because of the implemented covid protocols and loved that I was able to build/ create outside my own space in a supportive community. Owner Cherie and her team are helpful and encouraging, the vibe is fun, and the studio is clean and organized. I’m so happy I found Claytivity and I cannot recommend this studio enough to anyone interested in ceramics!

I did my first pottery class here tonight. Lovely place. Skyler, the teacher, was fantastic. Can’t wait to go back.

Loved my instructor for my beginning throwing class, Kelly. I was especially bad at throwing so I probably needed a private lesson. But I walked out with 3 pieces to put in my home!
