I recently had the pleasure of attending a show at this theater for the first time, and it exceeded all my expectations. The venue is well-designed with no bad seats in the house, ensuring a great view from anywhere. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, adding to the overall positive experience. Everything ran smoothly, from the ticketing process to the concessions. And the show itself was nothing short of amazing – a truly memorable performance that I won’t forget. I can’t wait to come back for another show at this fantastic theater.

The Mark Taper Forum is located in Downtown LA and is part of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion which houses other theaters. The entire Pavilion area is lovely. We used to always dine first at a Pavilion eatery, but sadly, the food is no longer good. And this includes all of the restaurants. They really need to work on that as they are losing more money by the day.

The Mark Taper is our main theater to go to at the Pavilion. The rest re-play things too often and the service has gone downhill.

The Mark Taper also has staff issues. They seem confused. We went to see American Idiot which is not the New York version, but one put together by the Taper and a community theater for the deaf. The play was signing, singing and the words were even at the top of its small stage. There were posters etc. concerning the community of the disabled. Sadly, I guess they don’t mean it or read their own signage.

I have a very hard time walking and standing, but I do it. I am just slow and can fall if I have to stand too long. We had to wait for 30 minutes in a line to get a soda. There were no railing to hold onto and when we finally got to a spot in the line where I could lean on the wall, I was yelled at by a staff member who told be «don’t do that.» I explained I could fall and he said again, «you can’t do that.»

Not one of the bathrooms are convenient for the disabled. The staff does nothing to help. This must change.

So, you may wonder why I gave them a 5 star rating. It is simple. They have new and different shows that are always great. They don’t re-play the same thing every year. The plays are new, fresh and always entertaining. American Idiot was amazing. This is what the Taper does well and why I tolerate the abuse.

The seating is somewhat comfortable and there is not a bad seat in the house. It is small. The prices are fair.

Parking is across the street and costs less now than valet (it used to be the same). The valet is also nice and right in front of the Taper

The stage is small and they use the space well. I have never seen a bad play or musical there. I will continue to go to the Taper, but I so feel bad for people who are more disabled then me.

The Mark Taper Forum is a cool theatre that seats 700 plus people with great sound comfortable seats and good sight lines at the Los Angeles Music Center. It’s renowned for showcasing groundbreaking plays and has been pivotal in launching many notable productions and careers. I recently attended This Bright Wilderness in celebration of historic black theatre and was thoroughly impressed by the powerful performances and emotional depth of the play. The invitation was unexpected but I would have no problem accepting the offer again if ever given the opportunity to experience such a brilliant production. The evening was truly unforgettable, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and storytelling prowess of the performers. I’d highly recommend this theatre if you’re looking for something special to experience in Los Angeles.

The academy tour was phenomenal. My mom, 2 sisters and cousin, Alicia, were just visiting some place new where we’ve never been and don’t have family. We lucked up upon this gem through a tourist guidebook of Los Angeles and we were not disappointed.

I saw the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in the guide and I was so excited. I’ve always admired her beauty, skill, commitment and talent. I told my family about it and they were all in.

I called to get information about a tour and was bowled over to learn that a tour was available the very next day and there was no charge. The tours are booked upon availability and there is NEVER A CHARGE.

I spoke with Ms. Sonya Morgan Charles, whom set up the tour. She was very energetic, enthusiastic and proud of and about the Academy.

The building itself was full of African-American Art, portraits and pieces that expressed our culture, heritage, talent, beauty and pride.

Imagine our delight and surprise when Mr. Norm Nixon, co-owner and spouse of, Ms. Debbie Allen, greeted us and became part of our tour. Needless to say, we were speechless and excitedly surprised. Mr. Nixon, was friendly, personable and approachable. My sister, Cynthia, was beside herself.

As I mentioned earlier, we traveled with our mother, whom is 90 years old and Mr. Nixon, engaged her and made her feel relevant when he asked her about her birthplace and he shared his
and the commonality that children of the South share.

I could go on and on but I want the pics I took speak for themselves. As a side note, we were secretly hoping Ms. Allen would pop in and we were told that she had planned on stopping by but, alas, we were not honored with her presence before we had to leave.

If you are ever in the Los Angeles area, specifically, Culver City, you must make time to honor and appreciate the dedication, love and commitment that Ms. Allen, Mr. Nixon, staff, children and parents have given to further the Arts in our children and our community.

I am not employed by the district, but I work at a school in LA and I was honestly shocked at some of the things said in the performance of ‘Hot Chocolate Nutcracker’ done by this academy in front of hundreds of children on a field trip. From one of the characters saying he’ll give another a “new thong” if she helps him out, to when two of the protagonists they say that “boys are just stupid” and that’s why they behave a certain way, there were just too many examples of things that should not be said in the presence of impressionable elementary school children in this performance. Call me crazy, but I don’t think that there needs to be a “Micky Minaj” reference or talk of a character “pushing drugs” in front of 4 year olds. As an educator, it is hard to tell children to steer clear of explicit topics when their school field trip takes them to see a talking rat do exactly that. This issue is made worse when there are elementary school children who were PERFORMING, so this was clearly not an specific mistake by the directors for this one performance. Normally I am not compelled to review things, however I feel like all the parents who were not allowed to attend the performance deserve to know what their children were exposed to, where the standards lie for this academy, and apparently the LA school district as well. Personally, I was appalled, but maybe I’m the crazy one.

I don’t go to your school but I heard about what you do and I think its awesome you would open a school of our minority. It’s a blessing that you can see in us people of all races that we have a gift within ourselves and people can start looking at us people of color as an inspiration not someone who looks at us and then rejects us. many see us but you see us in a different spectrum and say wow she or he is worth much more than they think which is so inspiring. Thank you for being a tool of color and believing in yourself. Debble Allen you are so humble you took rejection and turned it into positivity. Like I tell others do what you love and love what you do. God bless you and your school. By what you are doing your breaking ther Barrier and your touching millions. I do have a disability and when people talk I always say I’m worth more that what you see, God didn’t make a mistake. I want to encourage you to be the best. Debbie Allen if you read this thank you so much. Many doors will open for me one day I’m waiting by faith.

Liz Lira Dance Academy is an absolute gem for anyone looking to learn salsa and bachata dancing. From the moment I stepped into the studio, I was welcomed into a vibrant and supportive community of dancers. Learning these lively Latin dances was an absolute blast thanks to the incredibly talented instructors.

Liz Lira herself is a true master of her craft, teaching with a contagious passion and energy that inspires every student. George, Devon, and Zweli are also phenomenal teachers who bring their own unique styles and expertise to the classes. Each instructor creates an encouraging environment where you can learn at your own pace without feeling intimidated.

The group classes offer a great foundation, but I cannot recommend Zweli’s private lessons highly enough. His deep knowledge and meticulous instruction really took my dancing to the next level. Zweli has a way of breaking down even the most complex moves into easy-to-understand concepts. His eloquent teaching style made me appreciate the technical nuances I had been missing.

Beyond the excellent instruction, there’s an incredible sense of community at this dance academy. Friendships are forged on the dance floor as everyone supports and uplifts one another. The atmosphere is electric, filled with good vibes and plenty of laughter between dance moves.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or experienced dancer, Liz Lira Dance Academy offers classes for all levels in a fun, welcoming space. Do yourself a favor and immerse yourself in the rhythms of salsa and bachata here – you’ll be hooked!

This is a gem dance studio in Los Angeles. Taking their Salsa and Bachata class for 3 months and I have so much improvement on my social dance skills, physically and mentally. Liz is a truly excellent dance teacher and she is teaching us so many importance elements that most teachers will neglect. I took 9 classes a week they provide really nice classes package so please check it out you won’t regret❤️❤️❤️

My fiancé and I attended our first salsa beginner class this eve at Liz Lira Studio with teacher Zweli. He was awesome! He hold a DEEP passion for the dance but also a TRUE ability to teach. He so quickly got me out of my head and into my body.
I have taught elementary school for ten years and understand the grace it takes to toggle between teaching skill and also teaching self acceptance and patience. Zweli is a master of this.
We decided to take the class because we’re getting married soon and salsa may not be our forever dance BUT we wanted to move our bodies and connect with dance apart and together and that certainly was accomplished.
Huge props to Zweli and the fellow classmates who embraced our newness! We’ll be back!

My husband and I hired Liz for wedding choreography this summer. We paid for 8 dance lessons upfront and we’re promised a dance routine. What we got instead was Liz week after week building the dance in real-time as she “felt her way” through the song. She never gave us a full choreography to practice. It was especially frustrating because we would have a week between seeing her and try to practice what she showed us which were generic dance moves mostly for Cumbia rather than a full dance. She got really upset in one of the classes when I tried to correct my partner’s steps (because she failed at this herself) and told me it was her job that I was taking and that I needed to trust the process. This was difficult to do because she would often forget where we left off in the last class and it always felt like it took half an hour just for her to get up to speed with where we were. She also dropped a bomb on us last minute that she was going on a 3 week vacation right before our wedding (unbeknownst to us when we paid her $1,400 in the beginning)!! She offered to cram classes in the week of our wedding to makeup for this We eventually dropped her and made up our own dance which was WAY better than what she was trying to have us do anyway. Liz tried to get us to write her raving Yelp reviews and I would have but sadly I had a negative experience and don’t want others to make the same mistake we did. Do not recommend for wedding choreography at all. And there was often a strong odor in the class that smelled like mildew which I hope she fixes.

My daughter (14 at the time) went to LA from NJ for this camp for three weeks last summer and loved it. She did the film camp and the things that she was exposed to were amazing. The films she made, remarkable. She’s going back to the advanced camp this summer – and attending their winter program in NYC starting next week. Great program!

Our son did a 3-week core filmmaking at their LA location in 2024 and LOVED it. So much so, that we are sending him back in 2025 for the advanced film making in NY. It was a great experience for him. This was his first time away from home and to be out of state we were a little worried, but it worked out great. Thank you SOCAPA!

Our son is interested in filmmaking and screenwriting and aspires to someday direct.

He thoroughly enjoyed his experience last summer at Socapa LA and found it beneficial on many levels.

It was an engaging setting for him and validated his interest in the entertainment industry.

I believe this to be a great environment to further develop skillsets and help a young person determine if they do wish to pursue this path.

I literally found SOCAPA by Googling “summer camp for kids who don’t like camp.” It turned out to be a great fit for our art-oriented son who was very interested in film and wanted to explore filmmaking. He started with the virtual screenwriting program and enjoyed that enough to try the 3-week basic filmmaking summer program in LA. He had a great experience! He learned a lot about filmmaking and confirmed his desire to pursue it in college, met some new friends with interests similar to his, and loved the campus and LA scene. We were glad to find a summer experience for him that he could truly enjoy. We also love that it gave him an opportunity to “try out” his intended college program and experience a slice of college life prior to applying to colleges.

I’ll start by saying that I have no dance background, do not have a consistent exercise schedule, and am not coordinated whatsoever and I still have a blast at Align Ballet Method.

I always wanted to try ballet because it looks beautiful and I thought it would be a fun way to exercise and hopefully improve my posture. Recently I found out about Align Ballet Method and signed up for Align 1.

Michael is the owner and instructor and is fantastic. He is very encouraging, wants people to learn but also wants you to have fun. As he said in one of the classes, «If you’re waiting to have fun until you’re good at ballet, you’ll be waiting a long time. Have fun now and you’ll improve over time.»

I have now finished Align 1 and 2 and am taking a short break before Align 3 (the drive from work to Align is my only complaint!). I would absolutely be in here every day if I could. The hour flies by, it’s a fun group of people, the teacher is amazing, and the price is very reasonable (especially compared to most exercise classes in LA).

If you’re on the fence, try it. If you’re like me, it will soon become the highlight of your week.

I feel compelled to write this review as my experience at Align has been exceptional! I danced on and off from about 8 years old through college.
I had not taken a ballet class in over 30 years and was very intimidated to
go back and dance again. I started at Align less than a year ago and have loved going through the workshops, 1, 2 and 3. I haven’t moved on to the open classes yet, but I so enjoy going to class and being with people who are so warm and encouraging. I have taken classes with Michael and Grace and can’t say enough good things about both of them!
Michael is the owner and founder of Align and I think he’s a genius for starting a studio (now quite a few locations) where adults with little to no training could come in and learn ballet. My daughter, who dances en pointe, takes class here as well in the level 4 and five open classes and loves it, too!!

I cannot say enough about how much I love Align Ballet Method. It is the most incredible space for adult ballet, for beginners, intermediate dancers, and those looking to experience it again. The studio itself is great, and the instructors are top notch. I feel like I’m learning and growing in dance, really experiencing it again, which is wonderful. I only wish there was more of it! 🙂

I came to LA a year ago and wanted to get back to ballet so badly. I was looking for adult classes that allow drop-ins, and suits my busy graduate school schedule. Thankfully i found out about Align Ballet Method, which is structured very similarly to my previous school. From there, I’ve never hesitated to come back after my first class with Michael. They have something to offer no matter what level you are at: beginners, recreational dancers, ballet students, and even professionals! For beginners, the Flight School is a good starting point as it’s well-paced, and integrates basic ballet movements into exercises. If you want a more systematic approach, try the workshops to build a strong foundation. If you are like me who just enjoy dancing and want to work on footwork/ jumps and turns/ musicality, definitely drop in for an Align 4 or 5 open class- just like any company classes you have taken before, with a very supportive (and not competitive) learning environment! There are also Jumps and Turns workshops/ repertoire workshops/ performance workshops that are offered year-round. All the instructors have their unique style and I have NEVER walked out the class without learning something. If you enjoy dancing, want to return to ballet, or just want to get started and try it out, don’t hesitate to book a free class (yes the first class is free) and dance it out!

As someone completely new to dance and ballet, Align Ballet (Pico) has made me feel so comfortable and empowered. My instructor is very patient, encouraging and has good visual/physical tips to ensure we’re doing everything correctly and safely. I started with Align 1 and already signed up for the next round, Align 2. Would recommend to any newbie who is interested!

We had the privilege of joining the Artistico family 3 years ago and our only regret is not finding this gem earlier.

My daughter loves her teachers, fellow dancers and the variety of genres available for dance. Artistico has a truly diverse offering of classes, and not just focused on ballet. Most importantly the classes are great for all levels.

Each child works at their own pace and Artistico teachers make sure dancing remains fun, while also challenging. My daughter would dance at Artistico every day if she could and definitely considers the studio a second home because of the welcoming environment.

Artistico Dance is a gem! My daughter has grown so much as a dancer, a performer, as well as a person who values hard work and fun thanks for the wonderful teachers and her teammates!

Their productions for the winter and summer shows are amazing and the community is very welcoming.
Would highly recommend!

Linda is the owner and teaches most of the advanced classes. What we love about Artistico is how Linda’s full passion and soul are fully integrated into every class and program. They offer dance classes for kids of all ages in a wide selection of styles including ballet, salsa, rhythmic gymnastics, jazz and funk. They also offer the opportunity for kids to take part in two very large performances every year. In December there is the Nutcracker and in the summer there is a ballet performance and then a second performance that focuses on all the other styles. However, all the performances include all the Styles and everything from the costumes to the set design are always so impressive, given the size of the school. Both my daughters have been coming here for a few years and they absolutely love it. We have slowly been branching out into some of the other disciplines and it is great to have the option to do a top-notch ballet program but also try out some of the other styles, as their interests start to grow.

My daughter has been attending Artistico for the past 2.5 years, and the progress she’s made is truly remarkable. The instructors are not only skilled but also incredibly nurturing, providing a supportive environment for young dancers to thrive. The studio’s performances are nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the hard work and dedication of both students and teachers.

Their summer camp is an absolute gem, offering a comprehensive program that’s both fun and educational. It’s clear that the studio is committed to providing a well-rounded dance education while ensuring that every child feels valued and supported.

Overall, I highly recommend Artistico School of Dance to any parent looking for a place where their child can grow, learn, and truly shine.

Ms Linda, Ms Liv, Ms Alice and all of the other instructors at Artistico are amazing! They both encourage and motivate their dancers at every level. Most importantly, Artistico is a safe space where kids (and adults) are supportive of each other. Not to mention, they put on 2 incredible shows a year. My daughter started with one class has grown to love various styles of dance because of.the summer camp.

I bless the day that I found Maria’s website poisebymaria.com. I always wanted to learn how to dance and I couldn’t have chosen a better instructor than her. Maria is patient, very detailed, and provides everyone the opportunity to learn at their own pace. Maria has been my sole dance instructor for over two years now and I appreciate that she keeps salsa, salsa. If you decide to learn and start social dancing you’ll soon find that people can blend other dance styles with salsa or try to dance like they are performing. I started off with Salsa and Bachata group classes. Then branched out to cumbia and finally salsa caleña! I took advantage of my availability and took a package deal of 16 private lessons with Maria! Just know that you do have to dedicate time to practice on your own and it helps to go out social dancing early on. I receive a lot of compliments when social dancing and honestly it feels very great to know that my dance style is unique to other salsa students. Another perk about being Maria’s student is that you get to dance with her. Large salsa classes do not permit time to dance with the instructor(s). My dancing journey has only begun and my goal is to learn to lead to support my mom in her dancing journey! I’ll be signing us up for semi-private classes with Maria in the near future !

Such a sweet school if you’re looking for an intro level to ballet.
Location is with great coffee shops and restaurants nearby (we took sat AM classes and GGET was crucial to our experience).
Ms. Kelly is an absolute gem – try to get classes with her if possible!

My daughter has been taking classes at Twinkle Toes for the past year and we really love it! The instructors are very playful and sweet with my two year old, they really care about whether she enjoys herself and also that she learns something They hold a yearly dance recital for all of their classes and it’s a wonderful experience (and a tremendous undertaking!).

It’s a little shabby but we love love love Dina’s Sunday toddler class. Plus it’s near Kitchen Mouse and La Monarcha so there are plenty of treats for the family before and after class!

I’ve been a huge fan of American Contemporary Ballet for years now and I try not to miss a single show on their calendar. The Nutracker show is an annual tradition around Christmas time for my family and friends and Inferno has even recently become our annual spooky Halloween tradition. ACB Jazz in the spring and Balanchine in the summer are also great for any fans of dance and live music. The company is constantly putting out fantastic shows each season while also pushing the boundaries and challenging the form. There’s few things in life that are more inspiring and worth supporting than live performance. I couldn’t recommend ACB highly enough.

We attended the 2pm Nutcracker performance on 12/14/24. This is an OK event for children. Adult dance fans will find it very lacking. It felt like a pre-professional troop’s holiday recital for family.

Absolutely the most fabulous evening you’ll ever have with the most artistic ballet ever! So close and personal! The dancers are the best!

ACB is a relatively young company comprised of skillful and passionate dancers (many with years of experience with this company and others) and a director/choreographer focused on classical/Balanchine style but with a view to the future. Performances tend to be just a little over an hour with live, not canned, music so they are an excellent introduction for audiences new to, and perhaps a little intimidated by, the art form as well as those more knowledgeable looking for technical and artistic excellence.

The upcoming Nutcracker performances will be very family friendly and a terrific way to introduce children to both the art of the performer and to the «art» of attending a performance. In addition to dance performances, the Company occasionally does demonstrations and lectures («Dancing School» and «Conversations») that provide the audience with a way to learn more about, and to more profoundly appreciate (and to understand what to look for in), the technique, context and history of ballet and to develop a deeper appreciation of the art.

All performances end with an opportunity to meet and talk to the performers, musicians and directors.

With the dual focus on the art (technique, musicality, artistry) and education (for the dancers as well as the audience), this Company is unique here in Los Angeles and quite extraordinary throughout the dance world.

Having attended performances for six or more seasons, I can recommend it wholeheartedly as a way to enjoy and learn about ballet.

My husband and I have been attending shows for about 4 seasons now. It makes for a fun date night. Friends that we’ve introduced to ACB are often blown away.

Some of my favorite shows are Astaire Dances around Valentine’s Day and the Nutcracker Suite (an immersive experience) around the holidays. We love the intimate setting, the live music!

Be sure to stick around after the show to get to know the dancers, the artistic director and executive director. They are super approachable and make themselves available if you want to learn more about the company.

It’s a lovely ballet company I’m happy to support.

Danella Dutton’s Salsa On-1 Beginning Class is everything wonderful I’d expect from superior dance instruction, practice & mastery. I take the Monday night classes, where classmates are warm, dance moves explicitly explained, practiced, & eventually mastered. Fellow guys & gals with more experience, pls excuse my 2 left feet. I’ve progressed favorably in 10 months. I can now demonstrate knowledge of, if not mastery in, at least 12 cool movidas. I hope 2 learn a dozen more in this welcoming, inclusive community.
