We transferred from a high performing public school this year and could not be happier. Our daughter is thriving. She is in the second grade, and has a new found love of learning. I love that Highland Hall focuses on the entire child, instead of the rote memorization of facts that was passing as an education in her previous school. In four short months she has regained her self confidence and she can't wait to go to school. She is also learning how to be a good citizen, and to care about the earth and the people around her. She reads voraciously, and is suddenly very curious about the world around her. We have been welcomed with open arms, and love the community spirit at Highland Hall. Highland Hall Waldorf School is much more than just a school for our son. It's his tribe, his village, his friends for life, and the parents and most of all it's the amazing teachers whom I his dad will always cherish. Alex was at Carpenter in Studio City and doing well but you could sense he was getting lost in that sea of children, pushed around too much on those paved playgrounds. And I had a friend who's 3 children had had a dream childhood at Highland Hall so I finally did the tour. And I knew we wanted in. In a nut shell everything they stood for was my way of thinking. Deep and full of purpose, caring and incredibly welcoming and personal. And most of all the same and yet much more of what I new was going to make Alex a really great human being. And so he thrives and has friends and relationships I can't imagine he would have at any other school. And Highland Hall's curriculum is everything he needs and then some. The teachers are unique, caring and most of all a team. A really dedicated faculty that really cares and guides. The whole idea of how the school is run and the diversity of the education is really worth understanding. Especially with the way the world is today. I have 2 children attending Maple Village. One child in kindergarten and other child in parent toddler class. I am beyond happy with this school. I appreciate how responsive the teachers are. Both teachers have always been there for me when I needed help and guidance with my children. I know when I drop off my daughter each morning to school that she is in a safe, loving and nurturing environment. A place where she can be who she is.

As a public school educator (Speech pathologist) I get to see every day the differences between the Waldorf education and public school education. Although I work at one of the top schools in Long Beach I see key things that are missing in the curriculum of the public schools. The Waldorf education incorporates so many aspects that adhere to the natural development of the child’s brain. Mostly the child at a Waldorf school may not even know they are learning. Because of my education which incorporates many brain and child development teachings I greatly appreciate the education my children are receiving at Maple Village. I am happy they not only benefit academically but strive at building their will and confidence. And our family greatly cherishes the community, care, love (hugs) and inspiration that the teachers and staff at Maple Village have embraced our family with.

We have two children attending grades this year. The teachers are excellent, as are the assistants and specialty teachers. The staff is also very nice and well organized. All are committed to Waldorf education, which creates such a great environment for young children. The classrooms are beautiful and the curriculum is elegant but rigorous.

The community is really nice…a very friendly and open group of parents. Every day there is a lot of discussion and helpful debate about parenting, improving the school, etc. The level of commitment to the school is remarkable. It is an easy place to develop friends, organize play dates, get help with child care, etc.

We love the neighborhood setting of the school and the accessibility to nearby parks. Being able to walk or bike to school is a real plus. As the school grows it may have some growing pains but we really can’t imagine a better school to send your kids to for K to 5th grade. The price is very fair too.

My wife and I were drawn to Maple Village Waldorf School soon after moving to Long Beach in 2010 and it quickly became clear to us that the Waldorf style of education, as well as the small class sizes, the warmth of community at this school, and emphasis on healthy, sustainable living were going to fit our family well. After four years with the school I now feel that Maple Village is one of the best private school values in greater Los Angeles. Both of my children (currently in kindergarten and 2nd grade at the school) have flourished in an environment that teaches the whole child, with particular emphasis on art, handwork (e.g. knitting, sewing, and woodwork), music, storytelling, and movement to compliment the typical main lessons covering math, language arts, etc. I am happy to add that Maple Village also incorporates Spanish language instruction beginning in 1st grade and continuing through 8th grade. Teaching such a breadth of topics at a Waldorf school and incorporating creative ways to reinforce concepts is no easy task but so far my children’s teachers have been more than up to the task. This is a great school and I cannot recommend it enough for any parents considering the Parent-tot, Preschool, Kindergarten, or Grades programs up to 8th grade. Note that for working (or busy) parents morning and after-school care are available (morning care is free for Grades students).

It allows children to be children and fosters learning through the natural channels of childhood, play, song, art, dance, and story. The idea for the school is a great idea …But like most ideas that require humans so that it will work ,I feel like it’s a failure .When playing musical instruments and weaving or knitting come before reading and writing …Something’s wrong .
As well the information that we got about the plan for our son to be in the same class with all his classmates throughout his entire education …Fell to pieces after the very 1st year .
As well I don’t feel that this school offers any sort of real life experience or expectancy ,Leaving kids with an idealistic and unrealistic Perception of the World that I think is almost dangerous .While I wish the rest of the world could match up with the ideals of this school ,It’s just not so .

I love this school and I love the teachers! I also love that they are able to offer such a quality education at a much lower cost than other Waldorf schools.
The Waldorf education philosophy was rather new to me, but seeing how my granddaughter has been developing in preschool, I have become a firm believer.
I love the fact that Waldorf’s emphasis is not on how much technology, reading capability or math the child can learn in preschool, but how well the child can develop their imagination and thinking capabilities. Her imagination skills are constantly developing and when we have a play date she chooses the games and they are always filled with a vivid imagination and a love of nature.
Her preschool teacher is wonderful and I have seen firsthand the care and interest she shows towards developing these qualities in every child.
I also appreciate Waldorf’s strong music program. My granddaughter is always singing the songs she learns in school and is looking forward to learning how to play an instrument.
Waldorf also teaches the children how to interact with their playmates, teachers and other adults. I had an opportunity to witness my granddaughter respond to a rather harsh comment with respect, grace and a sweetness way beyond her age.
Waldorf discourages electronics for these little ones and for that I am very grateful. I firmly believe in Waldorf’s concept that children who learn to think not only outside the box but way beyond it will be able as adults to make extraordinary contributions to society and to solving our world’s problems. It is very exciting to watch my granddaughter grow and develop under such a great philosophy.

This school is amazing!! Nurturing, magical, inspiring, excellent dedicated teachers, with a great sense of community. We researched so many schools for months and months before finding this one, and I’m so happy we found it. I think it must be the best kept secret in the valley (as well as the best kept secret for people looking for an affordable Waldorf education). The quality of the teaching, and the overall dedication of the staff and parent groups is extraordinary. We’ve been there almost two years now, and my daughter can’t wait to go to school every day. I appreciate this school’s attention to encouraging wonder in the child. It seems to me that the most effective learning comes out of an original awe response that gives rise to curiosity. The City School not only encourages wonder but also develops the kind of free thinking that allows a child to engage that wonder. Class sizes are small so that the teachers have the time to build a deeper connection with each child. The work in languages, arts, and science come by way of creating connections between self and the world. My son loves it here.

Although I can’t say enough good things about the community of parents, the majority of the credit has to go to the teachers. We’ve been at Waldorf School of Orange County for 3 years now and absolutely love this school. Their Early Childhood department is outstanding and is the perfect place for our daughter. She would love to go to school seven days a week if we’d let her. But that is to be expected when your child gets to experience a school like this. The school is situated on the most fantastic location, right on the bluffs over a large nature preserve and park. Which the children get to explore when they leave the classroom and go on walks. The teachers are amazing too, sure they have years of training and experience but they also genuinely love each of their children, how do train for that? Our kids love it here! The teachers are great and truly care about your kids well-being – giving daily and weekly updates on how they ate, interacted and played with others, and writing/number progress. Our daughter is always learning new things and excited to share when she comes home. The days are very well structured and a good balance of learning and play, and definitely help the kids gain independence!

First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to all the teachers and staff of MAWA. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to see our daughter grow alongside with the A team. We moved from Tokyo to Los Angeles a couple years ago and were a little bit worried as our daughter’s first language was not English and she’s a bit shy. Now looking back, choosing MAWA is the best decision ever.

[Teachers] Ms. Esmeralda, Ms. Gabe, and Ms. Gina explained and demonstrated the Montessori way of teaching to us in details and we are amazed by the one-on-one academic lessons, the Montessori jobs, and group lessons (e.g., music, Spanish, and Mandarin). Our daughter can now communicate in English freely with her friends and her teachers. She volunteered to help out on folding clothes, she put toys back to the boxes after playing, and she learned to deal with her emotions when things are not going her way. Teachers from other classes (Ms. Julissa, Ms. Sophie, and others!) are very kind and supportive, which makes MAWA a very warm place.

[Materials / environment] We are very impressed by the academic lessons MAWA put together. Our daughter learned about the universe, the life cycle of plants and animals, the community (e.g., police officers and doctors) on top of the traditional A for Apple B for Ball. There is also a small garden in the playfield for kids to learn how to take care of plants and how to work with each other. Other parents are very friendly and supportive. We obviously are not from local but other parents are very kind to us and invited us to play dates, birthday parties, etc. which made our MAWA journey very very special.

We needed to move out of the States and had to end our MAWA journey earlier than expected. However, the time and friendship our family had in MAWA will go a long way. We highly recommend MAWA to all parents who want their children to have a wonderful time.

We have two children at MAWA and have been so pleased with our experience. The school is the most charming space with extremely warm and knowledgeable teachers/staff. The school director, Ruhi, has become like family and is the most impressive, knowledgeable and genuine person. She and the teachers truly care about these kids and are committed to providing a safe and comfortable environment where they can grow and learn, play and build confidence in themselves in a world outside of the home. That is so rare to find, and we are just grateful to have that for our kids.
